Big
Weekend Out for Mini-Sprints
The weekend of the Cascade Apple Isle
Grand Prix (Feb 1st & 2nd) the Minisprints will be contesting 2 big events
of their own, namely the Minisprint Prince of Speed on the Friday night and on
Saturday the Minisprint Masters.
With over $3500 worth of prize money and towage on offer the Minisprints sent
out invitations to the Melbourne Minisprint Club.
Two of the top Victorian drivers decided to take up the challenge.
Car # 13 is driven by Kevin Bailey a 46 year old business man from Yarra
Junction. Kevin has been racing for 11 years and has taken out state titles in
division 2 Minisprints and finished in the top 5 for six of the last seven years
in division 1.
A Datsun 1200 engine, running on methanol through twin Webber carburettors
powers Kev’s car. The car is chain driven through a home made gearbox.
Kev has a crew of all girls, his three daughters and wife, Pat that help him get
the car on track. He recently travelled to America and crewed for some of the
top Minisprint teams over there.
He is proudly sponsored by Cheater Wheels & Speedway Spares, and Rally Hose
and Hydraulics, both of Yarra Junction Victoria.
The second Victorian brave enough to come and take on our locals is Peter
Heppell driving Car #28.
Peter has been racing Minisprints for 5 years, before that he raced in a class
similar to Tas Sedans called 3 Litres and in his wild and younger days he raced
Sidecars and Motocross bikes.
Peter’s car also runs a Datsun 1200 engine, running on methanol through twin
Webber carburettors. The drive however is through a Volvo gearbox to a Mazda
differential.
Sponsored by Quick Race Parts, Dandenong Engine Reconditions, W & G Mowers
Somerville, Trailer Ads Signs, Somerville Mechanical Repairs, Ricks Bikes
(Harley Specialists), Peter loves his racing and looks forward to mixing it with
the Tassie guys.
These guys are sure to make things interesting while racing for the $3500 of
prizes being offered for the weekend. They won’t have an easy time on the
track however, with Mick Cruse (77), Shannon Wynne-Allen (21) and Bobby Redpath
(10), just a few of the locals that will be out there trying to take the cash
themselves.
Trophies for both events are sponsored by Redpath Haulage, M & S
Excavations, Mick Cruse and Carline Mufflers Devonport.
Huge Season Ahead
If this seasons calendar is anything to go by the season 2001/2002 is going to be HUGE. With 34 Meetings held over 35 Nights this looks set to be the biggest year in Tasmanian History!
Two tracks, Latrobe Cascade Apple Isle Speedway and the newly named Hobart International Speedway will run meetings on the same night! This will only happen on 2 dates, the 24th November and the 16th Hobart. While this situation is only on trial, I'm sure that it will enable more racing for all divisions.
The Carrick Speedway management committee is currently in negotiations with a new syndicate for the running of Carrick this season. More details when they come to hand!
The Federation of Australian Speedway Tasmanian Branch Inc. voted at their AGM on a name channge to the Tasmanian Speedway Control Council Inc
At the same meeting the Speedway Karting Association asked to be recognized at a division in its own right.

Rumor has it that Phil Coats (Tassie Sprint
