What is a Minisprint?

Minisprints are 1 of the most exciting and affordable classes of speedway racing in Tasmania. From a spectators view it's a thrill to watch, due to the open wheel racing which can provide its share of spills. And from behind the steering wheel it's one hell of an adrenalin rush!

The Modern Minisprint resembles that of a scaled down Sprintcar. With engines in the front, tyres and suspension similar to Sprintcars and large wings over the roll cage, (to aid in cornering) the cars are every bit a purebred racer.

Engine capacity on all cars are set to strict rules. The options are; Motorcycle Engines limited to 1200cc, Car Engines limited to 1400cc twin cam, 1500cc single cam or 10A rotaries. Turbo or superchargers are not allowable. Fuel used is either Methanol or Avgas.

Wheel and tyre sizes can be varied to aid cars gearing and stagger set-up. Cars can be driven by chain or drive shaft but must be able to start and take off on their own, thus eliminating the need for a push vehicle.

Each season the biggest race for Minisprints is the State Title, run on 1 night and conducted over several Heats and a Final. Other trophy events are held through out the season and in many cases points gained on a normal night of racing go towards a Series total.

Tasmania's' 3 tracks, situated at Latrobe, Carrick and Derwent Valley, are Clay Ovals approximately 440 meters long. The Speedway Season starts in October and runs till the end of April.
